Rise in Taxes is Threatening to Displace Long Standing Descendants of Enslaved Africans on Sapelo Island

Cultural Genocide and Displacement

Ugh I am close to tears. I was on fb and read on tashabilities jukebox jones page, a piece about a community of descendants of enslaved Africans on Sapelo Island. For those that don’t know its one of the islands off the coast of Georgia. And for those who don’t know rich white people LOOOVVVE these islands for their vacationing, retirement, and luxury homes etc. I was recently on a taxi ride in Savannah, where a driver told me about these secret luxury islands where they go to vacation and retire.

So anyway this group of people has been living there during slavery and since emancipation. It has experienced Spanish, French, and other rule over the span of its history. The last slave owner fled the island during the civil war and the people decided to stay there and make a life. NOW, the citizens of Georgia’s MacIntosh County, are trying to raise their property taxes after a “reappraisal” of the land and price them out. Representatives of the county currently decline interviews and questioning. The people on this island don’t receive city services like trash collection and there is no school. They are fighting this and rightfully so. They have a right to preserve their history, their legacy, and their way of life just like any other human being. But it appears they keep getting shot down in court.

There is no way that they shouldn’t have some type of federal and state protection. As direct descendants of a people forced to endure a horrible legacy, committed by the government and its people, they deserve federal protection and tax benefits. Far into the future and they are still being terrorized by the majority white community, who are likely descendants of those who committed some of the worst atrocities mankind has ever seen. At the very least the community that is targeting them are benefiting directly from the privilege created by these atrocities. All of this time has passed and our land and lives are still being ripped away from us. As soon as someone decides they want it… They can decide to make us pay more than we can afford, disrupt our community, and endanger our lives. This is so sickening and painful to observe. Here are some of the links I read and watched to obtain this information. There is more information and narratives of Geechee life on the facebook page as well.

Here is the facebook page you can join for support and keep abreast of the situation:

Here is a video link of a short documentary that gives a history of the island and what they are fighting for today:

Here is a petition to start with, though of course please do not stop there:

And here is the shared article I read on Jukebox Jones for anyone that is interested:

States’ refusal to expand Medicaid leaves millions uninsured

While Tuesday marked the launch of statewide health insurance exchanges that promise to provide millions of Americans with affordable health care, throngs of poor and uninsured residents face a gap in insurance coverage that the sweeping legislation will do nothing to fix.
According to data analysis released by The New York Times Thursday, as many as 8 million people will remain outside of health care coverage envisioned under the terms of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, because they live in states that have refused extensions to Medicaid, the national health insurance program for the poor.
Currently, 26 states — all with Republican governors or Republican-controlled legislatures — have thus far declined Medicaid expansion, leaving the health care situation of millions of uninsured people unchanged.

I’m laughing so hard at the border sign differences between Canada and the U.S

First we have Canada that’s pretty okay, yeah greeting us in French as well! Thank!

And then we have America…

Jesus..

it’s like the whole country is a fucking theme park

Aren’t we in a way.

That ‘welcome to the USA’ sign. I am stunned that there isn’t a bald eagle on it too.

California enacts slew of bills expanding undocumented immigrants' rights | Al Jazeera America

thebicker:

Among other things, undocumented immigrants can now practice law in California. Employers can’t retaliate against their workers because of their immigration status, and law enforcement officials are prohibited from detaining immigrants based on federal government instructions (unless it’s a serious crime). The governor also signed a law allowing undocumented immigrants to get a driver’s license.

Governor Jerry Brown said, ‘While Washington waffles on immigration, California’s forging ahead. I’m not waiting.”

I’ve added some cute puffy skirts to my shop :) (there is no underskirt, the fabric is light enough to create volume with just the gathering).  The elastic waist fits dolls from Monster High and Ever After High waist sizes up to Blythe and Azone.

Support Navajo-Made Film, Monster Slayer

soilrockslove:

nitanahkohe:

from their Indiegogo page:

The Monster Slayer Project is a contemporary visual retelling of the story of the Navajo Hero Twins, Monster Slayer and Born for Water. This project attempts to explore who these figures might be today, and what foes they might face. Our film is set in a small town on the Navajo Nation and follows our protagonists, Shondiin and Nathan Yazzie as they follow in the footsteps of the legendary Hero Twins to gain the ability to defeat fearsome monsters that have been emerging from the wilderness, and to solve the mystery of their origin.

Our film seeks to bring the story of the twins to a younger generation, and to create mainstream images of native characters who are strong, self-reliant, and motivated heroes. We want to make something that will appeal to a large audience, but especially to youth from the Four Corners region…The end goal of this project is the production of a feature film or television series to be produced in the Gallup area, and on the Navajo Nation. By melding the ancient storytelling traditions of the southwest with current revolutions in digital image-making and special effects, we seek to bring these characters to life.
